Yes, with the world at their fingertips Rockstar decided to blow lots of their profits from GTA III on some very expensive audio. GTA III had a good soundtrack of no-name songs that created the right atmosphere, but Rockstar, being able to write their own ticket, went all out for Vice City and filled the disc right up with the most awesome tunes of the 80's, from 'Video Killed The Radio Star' to 'Tempted' to 'Billie Jean' to everything in between. I was only able to play the first few hours of Vice City, but I really want to go back just to drive around and listen to the music. Speaking of which, what a difference a soundtrack makes. Who knew that what 2002's jaded shoot-em-up fans wanted was a prettier, goofier setting, featuring the music they listened to on the radio while they were in booster seats? Were they nuts? Apparently not, as gamers not only didn't mind the change in venue, they ate it up. And their idea for the follow-up was to take all that away and put the player into a similarly fictionalized version of sunny Miami, with upbeat 80's rock on the radio, gorgeous pink sunsets, and palm trees. Sure, Rockstar had the world's most popular game by a good country mile, but the previous GTA games were all tied together by their setting: A fictionalized version of New York, with seedy slums, diseased hookers, and a life of crime that pervaded every piss-stinking nook and cranny. It's important to not forget just how risky a move this was. Another bold move? It takes place in the 1980s.
